Session 6 On Being Together

As part of session 6 of the RAW Académie CURA, RAW Material Company invites you to "Ritual as institution", a public lecture with Elvira Dyangani Ose on Tuesday April 23rd, 2019 at 6:00.

There was a recurring portrayal by artists and projects featured in the eight edition of Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) of the crowd – or individuals within it – as a visual representation of the new social imaginary emerging from specific historical junctures. In those particular cases, the crowd – the people – embodies the promised sense of togetherness anticipated by leaders and followers of the most significant 20th Century revolutionary movements. A sense of togetherness that, as Boris Buden points out, always implies the quality of being a refuge or shelter, of providing protection from some sort of danger. This presentation draws from some of the ideas and works displayed at GIBCA 2015 that aimed to scrutinize the grammar of various sociopolitical junctures, bringing unknown subjectivities and politics to light; highlighting aspects of an international comradeship; and seeking to open up and expand the readings of contemporary history.
